Written Review soon to come!

One More Dull Post…

•October 26, 2010 • 12 Comments

So once again I need to make a decision regarding these reviews which have been absent for the past… uh… who knows how long? Too long. As I have stated over and over again I am back at school right now BUT unlike what I said before, I now have all my gear with me! This means I might be able to start reviewing again… sorta. One thing I don’t have with me is my mask and woodland camo (I have Multicam and MARPAT with me) so that might restrict my reviews a bit. The bigger problem is that I am in an apartment and have no backyard to review in anymore and on top of that I have no where around me where I can really do reviews like I normally do.

You might be thinking “Oh ok Nick, why are you telling us all this… again?” but I have a proposal for all you out there. What I can do is make more reviews, but make them more serious and professional reviews rather than the normal reviews I do have. Yes, this does mean I will be “out of character” and won’t behave like I normally do but rather take it seriously and do more in depth reviews.

And if I don’t do these “serious reviews,” then what? Well quite frankly there wouldn’t be any reviews for a while AND you wouldn’t see reviews for a lot of guns and gear which I am going to sell before I will have access to my mask again. So if I don’t do any reviews you will not see reviews for KWA M4, G&G MP5, KS P90, and gear such as the OE Tech Plate Carrier. On top of this you wouldn’t see a video for a very long time (meaning next summer).

So before I ramble any farther and say anything else and bore the hell out of all of you, I’m just going to give you guys the poll and let me know of any opinions or questions you have by commenting on this post. If you reply “no” feel free to tell me why not because right now I am leaning towards doing serious reviews.

11/1/2010 UPDATE: Poll has been closed, majority goes to serious reviews! Don’t worry though, like I said you will still see masked reviews in the summer!

Write on Glass

•October 10, 2010 • 1 Comment

So I get a lot of questions from you guys on my YouTube account (and I mean A LOT of questions) and some of them are hard to answer without trying to find a link to physically show you guys certain things. Well I believe I found a better solution to answering any of your airsoft questions and it uses a new internet app called Glass (link to their website).

To sum up Glass in a bottle; it’s a program that works along with your internet browser (so long as you are using Firefox or Google Chrome) and is a way to share links with one another. Let’s say, for example, somebody finds an AEG that they don’t know anything about, using Glass they make what’s called a “slide” on that specific webpage. This slide is then sent to whomever they choose to share it with (in this case with me) and I can then view the exact webpage the slide was posted on and I, or anyone else they shared it with, can comment on it and I can tell you whether you are completely wasting your money or not. What this will allow me to do is easier address any airsoft question you might have AND it will allow me to link to you guys certain webpages as well if I find something better for you. If this didn’t make sense just watch the video down below:

There are only two things you need to remember though in order to use Glass;   1) You have to make sure you are using Firefox or Google Chrome because Internet Explorer and Safari WILL NOT WORK! (I use Google Chrome and find it way better than the rest but regardless, Firefox and Chrome are both better than Internet Explorer and Safari) and   2) To join Glass is by invite only, so if you want to join you have to send me your email address and then I will send you an invite to join Glass.

So if you are at all interested either write your email address below, send it to me in a message on YouTube, or email me with it directly to ngourlie@gmail.com. If you have any other questions about it feel free to ask and I will be more than happy to answer.

Yet Another Formal Apology…

It seems I have admittedly been quite flaky when it comes to making another review over the past few months, or year, or however long it has been. This whole summer I just never managed to find enough time to post a review and for that I apologize to all of you. I told you I would get a review up, and I never did. One thing just kinda led to another and it just never happened and now I am back at college with no airsoft gear at all. On top of everything I kinda took a temporary break from airsoft. No worries though, with my attendance of a zombie game taking place in Spokane, WA on October 16th I am for sure getting back into it. I just need to get all my gear that is back home to my apartment on the other side of the state and I can start doing more mil-sim events again! Fun bones…

Back on topic! Normally in a situation like this I would say “Don’t worry! Expect a review in a month or so…” but that promise will not be made today or any time in the near future. What I do promise you is that there will in fact be more videos, but I have no idea when these will created and posted. Once I have filmed a review I will make a post immediately and get the video up as fast as I can edit it, and let me tell you, I still have quite a lot of stuff to review (And I’m not talking about cheap-ass AEGs, I mean G&Gs, CA, KWA, and hopefully a VFC or two not to mention all the new gear I have as well).

Anywho, back to the point at hand, I once again apologize for disappointing you guys and I hope to get a video up… eventually!

And for those that live in or around Spokane, WA and are interested in the zombie event,  here is the website that is hosting the event Z-Day II (my name on the forum is the same as my callsign: “No-Name”). It will be the first zombie game I am attending and I’m going as a survivor… should be epic shit, y’all should get your asses out there!

Sorry Everyone…

I feel like I have been letting you guys down, I’ve promised you reviews for May, and now that May is over I have no new reviews online. Quite simply the fact is that I didn’t have as much time as I thought I would to make reviews. Another issue has been the availability conflicts between me and Nate. College ended at the beginning of May for me but Nate is still in school for another week or so. On top of that it doesn’t help that I have been working quite a bit and most of my shifts fill the entire day until the evening when it is too dark to review.

However, we have agreed that the next nice day we have (it’s been raining quite a bit here, what do you expect; I live in the Seattle area) we will review and I also have plenty of more gears and guns to review. I will try to get them up as soon as possible and I apologize for this wait.

May is Coming…

•April 27, 2010 • 2 Comments

So May is coming which means more reviews! As I mentioned earlier me and Nate plan on filming a bunch of different reviews and releasing them throughout all of summer which means I have something do decide… which videos to release first and I figured, why not ask you guys!

Sometime this summer I also plan to meet up with my good friend and teammate Nick Day and he will let me review his VFC SCAR, CA M4, and TM P226. On top of this I also plan on buying a CA M15A4 PMC so expect to see a review of that as well.

If all goes as planned, filming will start the week of May 8th.

Sporting Goods Stores and You

•April 20, 2010 • 2 Comments

I feel like there was once a time (and maybe for some reading this that time is now) in an airsofter’s life where they have walked into a sporting goods store and drooled over some of the airsoft guns they have in there. I know this was once the case for me when I was around 15 years old. However over time I came to realize one simple fact; airsoft guns found in sporting goods stores (i.e. Sports Authority, Wal-Mart, etc.) are complete garbage and an overall waste of money.

If you ever find yourself in a situation where you are about to buy an airsoft gun for a sporting store I would just take this advice and think twice about your purchase decision. Let’s take, for example, this rifle; the Crosman Pulse 76. You might look at it in the store, think it’s a cool looking airsoft gun even though it’s clear. You read the box that tries to over-glorify the damn thing and you think that it has some pretty decent stats. Maybe you then go home and look it up online and read up on some of the reviews on the website and stumble upon things like this (and no joke, this is off their website):

“I use this gun with a red dot sight, a grip, a taclight, and a lazer pointer sight and man, this thing is amazing. I picked off 2 of my friends with sniper rifles who were 100+ yards away. Ive had it for 1/2 a year and it hasn’t broken yet. Also, i used camo duct tape on it to add cool military effect!”

“Oh wow!” you say to yourself, “this gun can pick off snipers from over 100 yards away! This must be a super leet gun!” WRONG! Now you have purchased a gun for $130 that lacks any form of range, accuracy, and velocity all because the flashy box and misleading online review led you to believe it was a good AEG. Bummer, guess you shouldn’t have bought from a sporting goods store.

Wal-Mart Pictures, Images and Photos
Instead of purchasing a Crosman (which I would NEVER recommend) that money could have been spent better by purchasing a JG or an Echo1. Sure it might cost a few more bucks to get those brands but honestly if you are looking to save a few bucks here and there when shopping for an airsoft replica, then airsoft might not be the best sport for you. It is going to cost money and often times it is worth it to spend the few extra dollars to purchase something of higher quality that will perform outstandingly and last you quite some time.

To go off topic a little here, Big 5 is one slight exception to this idea that sporting goods stores sell shitty airsoft guns. They have began to sell Classic Army Sportline replicas as well as selling the fully licensed CYMA Thompson. While this is a small step towards carrying higher quality AEGs it might serve as something significant as other stores might follow suit and sell replicas of higher quality. Now what I am saying here does not mean that every airsoft gun in Big 5 is great, because this is not even remotely the case. On top of this the good AEGs they do carry are over priced and a better deal could be found from either buying online or from a local airsoft store/surplus store.

In general, I would just have to advise not buying anything airsoft from a sporting goods store until they truly begin selling quality AEGs at competitive prices. It will just lead to disappointment and in a few years when you get more into sport and realize just how bad they are you will be glad that you never bought from one.

Mags: High Caps vs. Mid Caps

•April 16, 2010 • 1 Comment

There have been numerous debates throughout the airsoft community on which is better, high-capacity mags (meaning mags that hold around 250-400 BBs) or mid-capacity mags (hold around 80-120 BBs) and I think it is time to state my opinion and share some pros and cons that I have accumulated over the years I have been airsofting.

High-Cap Mags: I am going to start this thing off with high-cap mags. The vast majority of AEGs will come with high-cap mags and for this reason some will classify them as being the “default magazines” for airsoft. It can be argued however that this is not the case and that just because most AEGs come with these mags does not mean one should buy 10 high-caps in order to complete a full loadout. Before I get too far into the details, let’s take a look at the pros and cons for high-caps:

  • Pros:
    • Can hold more rounds per mag
    • 5 high-caps will hold more BBs than 5 mid-caps
    • Don’t have to reload as much (this is not a pro in my opinion because I love reloading and the realism that goes with it, but the common census is that this is a pro, so I will add it to the list)
  • Cons:
    • BBs inside the mag tend to rattle
    • Mags have feeding issues
    • Can lead to strategies of posting in a corner and constantly firing while winding the mag (con because this is a very nooby move and will often cause the shooter loss of respect within the airsoft community)
    • Expensive

Mid-Cap Mags: These mags do not hold nearly as many rounds as high-cap mags and do not require the shooter to constantly wind the mag before firing. A lot of mil-sim (military simulation) operations will require everyone on the field to be using mid-caps or standard-caps (which hold 20-30 rounds depending on what the real steel variant holds). The reason for this is it creates more realistic scenarios and forces the shooter to conserve ammo, leading to better timing of shots and provides a more realistic experience. Now for the pros and cons before I dive deeper into this:

  • Pros:
    • Provides a more realistic experience
    • Mags feed very well down to the last few shots
    • Trains the shooter to take only the best shots
    • BBs in mags don’t rattle
    • Low cost
  • Cons:
    • Have to use speed loader to load BBs (can take a while when you have a lot of mid-caps, I myself have 16 for my G&G MP5)
    • Can’t hold as many rounds (Not a con in my opinion, but I know it is to some)

The Verdict: Aside from the fact that they don’t break the bank as much, I would recommend mid-caps over high-caps for various reasons. Such as the pros I listed for mid-caps, it trains you to take the best shots and you quickly learn not to take potshots on some guy way off in the distance or visible through a tiny hole. This in turn not only will make you a better player but will also help keep you and your squad hidden, seeing as there isn’t constant firing being rained down and sound emitting from your vicinity, and you will find that you can better get a drop on the adversary. Mid-caps also offer the far more realistic experience which is really what airsoft is all about, trying to make the game as realistic as possible.

When speaking in terms of how the two are viewed in the airsoft community as a whole, a player who use mid-caps can often times earn more respect than those using high-caps. This especially applies in close quarters scenarios where some people insist on sitting in a corner with their high-caps dumping  hundreds of rounds on the other guy until you either 1) land a lucky hit or 2) a squad member flanks around to take the guy out. Seems like a legit strategy? Maybe. But what are you going to do when everyone ridicules you for using “nooby” tactics. Sure you got the guy out, but now you aren’t as much of a respected member in the airsoft community.

The ultimate decision from choosing high-caps or mid-caps really does wind down to YOU, the shooter. Unless required by certain games no one (including myself) can force you to choose which one to use. However, I hope you have taken my advice to heart when making your decision and that you make the choice that feels right to you.

More Videos Soon to Come

•April 15, 2010 • 5 Comments

I realize that it has been a while since I have made a review for you guys, I’ve been too busy with school and even on my breaks I end up working most of the time so I could never really squeeze in time to work on any reviews. But quite frankly I think this should change.

Sometime during May me and Nate are going to begin filming more reviews which I will releasegradually throughout the next few months. Expect to see reviews on replicas such as: G&G MP5, KS P90, JG G3, VFC SCAR, CA M15A4 PMC, and more as well as reviews for gear such as plate carriers, goggles, and optics.

Until then, feel free to subscribe to this site from the right hand column of this page to receive alerts of when I post new content. All the post I publish will all be airsoft related and not only consist of reviews, but also my advice and opinions on all things related to airsoft.
